Visiting the highest peak of our country is a must. It is an attractive destination for those who want to breathe crystal clear air, need relaxation or a sport.
The highest peak of our country is 1014 metres that is marked by a stone with national colours. In 1889 the Mátra Division of the Hungarian Carpathian Association built a 20 meter-high lookout tower made of wood that was named as Mátra tower. After Trianon the peak that was practically unknown so far quickly became the highest peak of the country. A great scale development started in Kékestető in the 1930’s as road works were completed and in 1934 the present-day sanatorium was inaugurated as a luxury hotel. Buses started to run and ski runs were created. The decaying wooden lookout tower was pulled down in 1938 and those who wanted to enjoy the panorama from the highest point of the country had to wait till 1980. That is when the new TV tower was constructed. In the past period there have been large-scale ski run developments. Kékestető awaits its guests with its sub-Alpine climate, crystal clear air, ski runs, pleasant tourist paths, forest reserves and excellent views.
